Doctors Unaware of Cancer-Treatment Side Effects | IdeaFeed | Big …

May 19th, 2012

Article written by guest writer Rin Mitchell

What’s the Latest Development?

Doctors have been clueless about the long-term side effects chemotherapy can have on cancer survivors. When cancer is discovered, the main goal is to provide the necessary treatment to rid the patient of the disease. For many patients that means numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation until tests and scans come up free and clear of cancer signs. Nearly 1,100 primary care physicians were surveyed on the long-term effects of four of the most-widely used chemotherapy drugs to treat the two most-common types of cancer: breast and colorectal. Only six percent of primary care physicians and 65 percent of oncologists were aware of the side effects. Why aren’t these numbers higher? Cancer survivorship is a new area and physicians were not medically trained to help survivors dealing with long-term effects. The main focus for doctors has been to keep the patients alive.

What’s the Big Idea?

Doctors must be educated on treatment-related problems that can arise in cancer survivors. They need to be trained on how to deal with patients that are dealing with internal and psychological issues. With the success of cancer care, at the start of treatment a plan should be designed to prepare patients for the long-term side effects.

Nine Days with Cancer — The Good Men Project

May 19th, 2012

Jim Mitchem learned a lot in nine days.

Previously published on Obsessed with Conformity.

Two weeks ago today I wrote a post on cancer and its mystery. It was in response to the guy from the Beastie Boys dying. Two days later I was diagnosed with skin cancer and wrote another post on the topic. This is my last post on cancer. I’m officially done with it.

The day I was diagnosed with a tiny little flake of skin cancer on my chest, I wasn’t expecting it. I had basal cell carcinoma. Nine days after being diagnosed, I had it burned off. Now it’s gone. And I feel lucky. Of all the kinds of cancers you can get, I got the good one. No, there are no guarantees, but basal cell isn’t deadly and for 99.99% of the two-million people who contract it each year, once it’s removed it doesn’t return. Not in the same spot, anyway. So mine’s gone. And I’m grateful. And yes, I have to be more careful in the sun now.Which, for this Florida boy, won’t be simple.

The whole thing was a strange trip. I mean, it’s cancer. The big C. When you are diagnosed with it, it doesn’t matter what ‘kind’ it is – you’re labeled. It’s like being handed a black spot by a pirate. And when they learn you have it, most people say, “I’m sorry.” Until last week, I was one of those “I’m sorry” people – because I was ignorant. I just assumed that all cancer was a death sentence unless you go through six months of chemo. Um, wrong.

quit smoking a couple of months ago after a freak illness felled me and forced me into the hospital for 36 hours (for just $18,000 by the way) where for two nights I listened to old people down the hall wail in pain as they died from cancer. I never really liked smoking. Yes I started smoking because it was cool. And sure, I enjoyed one after a good meal or with my morning coffee, but I never liked the taste or smell of cigarettes. If anything, I resented smoking because I couldn’t quit. But that one trip to the hospital was enough to shake me up and get me to take more responsibility for my body. So I stopped. I immediately gained 10 pounds, of course, so now I’m working on being responsible for that too. But I digress, the main reason I quit smoking was so that I didn’t die of some horrible form of lung cancer that killed me slowly while my family stood beside and watched me whittle away. Then within weeks of quitting smoking, I’m diagnosed with cancer. I could have predicted this had I stopped to consider irony.

Over the past nine days I’ve learned a lot about the idea of cancer. First of all, yes, it’s still a mystery. Despite our breakthroughs over the years, cancer is still unsolvable. It is treatable, however. Some cancers, like mine, barely qualify as cancer at all. So having cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. If anything, it just attaches a stigma to you that you can never shake. You’re in the club now. Pink ribbons and all that. It’s just I will never think of myself as a ‘survivor’ after my short bout with cancer. Don’t’ get me wrong, I respect the hell out of the survivor club – I just don’t want a membership card.

The most important thing I learned from this ordeal, however, is something I already knew. That people care. I continue to be reminded of how great the digital age is when it comes to the real things of real life. Any time I’ve ever shared anything important, people have reached out through the wires and glass and connected with me. An anniversary. An illness. Asking for help. It doesn’t matter – I’m convinced that one day when we look back we’ll agree that the greatest purpose of the internet is enhanced human connectivity. Over the course of those nine days I was approached by several people within social media who shared their own stories of enduring and solving this type of skin cancer. Most all of them grew up in the deep south below I-10 before SPF sunscreen – just like me. These people helped me to understand the nature of the disease and helped calm me down after the initial shock. I’m extremely grateful for them. And for all the support from everyone else.

Nine days later, my little fleck of cancer is gone. Yes, it was responsible for a few sleepless nights, but now it’s been burned away. In fact, I now have a little black scar on my chest where it looks like someone put out a cigarette. How appropriate. Anyway, this scar will surely be a lasting reminder of a few things.

1) That God employs irony to make Himself laugh.

2) That I am a fallible being that needs to respect the sun as a massive nuclear reactor that is constantly flinging radiation at earth.

3) That no matter what happens in my life, sharing my experiences is paramount to my sanity. Because I know I have friends who will help me get through virtually anything.

Thanks for reading. Now go apply some sunscreen.

State Department Does Not Care for Breast Cancer Talk | We Meant …

May 16th, 2012
  • State Department Does Not Care for Breast Cancer Talk

    May 16, 2012

Don’t bury the lede: The State Department disowned a blog by a Foreign Service officer’s spouse because it discussed her own struggle with breast cancer instead of the happy traveling tales they seek.

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the ACLU statement, which basically says the State Department rules on blogs and free speech would not withstand a Constitutional challenge, and that my First Amendment rights were violated. In support of me, the ACLU did a deep dive into the books, and found State’s regulations wanting, particularly as they apply to new media/social media.

I am not the only Foreign Service blogger out here, of course. There are hundreds of us. In fact, to cozy up to “young people” who are considering a career in the Foreign Service, State even links to some illegal Foreign Service blogs on its own US Government web page. Have a look! Linking to those blogs is an attempt to show that the State Department is a “with it” place to work, a “groovy gig” for “teens” who Twitter or something.

Some are More Equal Than Others

Now the question is of course why are some blogs that violate the rules quite officially accepted by the State Department, and why are other blogs that violate the rules (mine!) fodder to get the author fired. It seems to have something to do with content; if what you write fits State’s agenda, you can break the rules all you want. You don’t even have to update– one linked blog hasn’t been touched for over a year but since it paints a happy-rosy picture of our 51st state in Iraq, it is all OK.

Since State refuses to join the current century and update its social media guidelines, and since writing down “we’ll screw you if you cross us” would not help attract job candidates, we in the blogosphere are forced to identify the boundaries by bumping into them, like walking through the house in the dark.

    Cancer is Not Allowed

A new boundary at State is nipples. Can’t talk about them. Or breast cancer, don’t talk about that either. One long time Foreign Service blogger, Jen, was dumped from the official list of good blogs by the Department of State. She received an email from State explaining why:

Hopefully, you can understand that some topics covered in your blog are very personal in nature, e.g. nipple cozies, and wouldn’t necessarily resonate with the majority of potential candidates who are interested in learning about the FS life overseas. Through our years of recruitment experience, we found that FS prospects want to learn more about the work that’s conducted, the people and cultures with whom they will interact, the travel experiences, and the individual stories our employees have to share.

    Jen’s response was straightforward:

So you mean describing stories about life after a diagnosis of breast cancer while your FS husband is serving in Iraq on an unaccompanied tour 6,219 miles away is not an individual story? You mean detailing how you got through said issue, how you managed to pick yourself up off the floor each day despite feeling like your world had completely fallen apart (oh, wait, it had) and managed to somehow dust yourself off and keep going with your Foreign Service life is of no interest? Guess that means I am the *only* one who will ever have to deal with such a thing.

The fact that we ended up doing a second unaccompanied tour? Booooring. Or that I had what, 4 surgeries in the past 18 months (scheduled AROUND my husband’s most recent posting, so that he would be able to complete his obligations?)? Um, hello, that’s *too* personal, repugnant even!

So, as a public service, all State Department personnel should in their blogs a) not mention nipples; b) pretend everything is as happy as pooping out unicorns and gold dust and c) tell spunky stories of adventure abroad so that gullible young people will continue to join the ranks of we few, we happy few.

Meanwhile, Hilary Clinton’s State Department will continue to pretend to support breast cancer awareness when it has propaganda value, while hoping any of her employees or their family members afflicted with the disease will just shut the hell up.

And to bring it all full circle, the State Department censored Jen’s blog about her breast cancer the day after they got the ACLU letter talking about first amendment rights.

COTD: Momma Got Cancer In Her Breast Edition

    May 16th, 2012

Ah, to everyone saying “I don’t like the fact that it’s a hybrid”… I’m glad you’re not engineers.

Plain old average joes think hybrids = low performance, thanks to the Prius. Kind of like how people think salads = healthiness. There is such a thing as eating too many salads and unhealthy salads, you know. Shortcut thinking = no innovation.

Hybrid drivetrains are just another form of tech. they increase performance while lowering fuel consumption. Just because Toyota’s only been using it to “boost” an 80HP engine to 100HP of performance doesn’t mean the tech couldn’t be used to boost a 600HP engine to 700.

Thank you, Porsche, for exploring all applications to a technology. My god, imagine if all cars had to be made of steel only, because aluminum is for pop cans. Or no air conditioning, because cooling technology is for refrigerators. Or no GPS, because that shit’s only for hikers. Or massaging seats, because vibrators are only for phones and dildos.
